Berlin Course

After a year at Manchester School of Architecture I registered for a University of Toronto Summer Abroad course. The 'Studies in International Architecture' course with Eric Höweler, a New York architect practicing at Diller + Scofidio, and J. Meejin Yoon, an assistant Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as the instructors, takes place in Berlin.
The program consists of Berlin's urban history topics from the turn of the century, to the city under the Third Reich, its destruction following World War II, its division during the cold war, and the recent building boom. It also involves a number of trips around Germany including trips to Dresden and Potsdam.
This fascinating course, that not only encourages
the study of specific buildings like the Reichstag, the Jewish Museum, and
Checkpoint Charlie and works by Walter Gropius, Erich Mendelsohn and Peter
Behrens but also
consists of assignments that require exploration and creative presentations
and documentations of other aspects and elements that make up a great city.
