Growing Idea
With the ‘Wooden 2 x 3 Expansion Project’ my main idea was the growth or an expansion of an idea. It could be any idea. Sometimes it might be enough to plant a seed or an idea and something can grow out of it.
To illustrate this idea I chose to build
a wooden structure as a metaphor for the growth of a plant. Starting small
from a corner of a room I built an expanding structure using lumber, 2x3 inches
and 8 feet in length. Almost 200 pieces, screwed together, first filled the
room and then expanded through the entrance out into the corridor and around
the corner. The placement of wood ‘grew’ uncontrollably, and symbolically,
like a good or a dangerous idea, through openings, into spaces behind light
fixtures and between the piping and utilities of the building. The best part
was the fact that everybody wanted to interact with the structure....maybe
they wanted to grow together with this idea....
