During the summer 2006 I took a Modern Art History course in Siena, Italy:

Italy in International Modernism: 1909 to the Present

The course took us from the First Futurist Manifesto in 1909 through, Cubism, Expressionism, Dada, Constructivism, Surrealism, Futurism, Metaphysical Art, Performance Art, Conceptual Art and Arte Povera into the present day.

The best part, besides living six weeks in Tuscany, were the numerous field trips to the major museums, collections and international exhibitions of contemporary art from Rome to Venice. Visiting the installations organized by Arte all'Arte around various communities throughout Tuscany was very interesting. Studying Photodynamism of Anton Guilio Bragaglia, finesse paintings of Fontana, radical approach to architecture of Vito Acconci and human sculptures installations of Antony Gormley as well as many other modern artists brought me up to date with avangard and contemporary art. I also learned a lot about the design and the urban planning of medieval towns. The visit to Paladio’s Villa Rotunda was awesome.

The bonus of staying in the city of Siena was the festivities surrounding the medieval "il Palio" horse race.

Architecturally, most fascinating I found the creation of Olafur Eliasson and Tobias Rehberger. The bright neon green forms set in the countryside near Siena were fascinating on the outside as well as inside. I found them so captivating that I stayed up till 5 am to draw them.
